Reynard the Fox, a collection of anonymous texts from the 12th and 13th centuries, revisits the ancient tradition of ancient animal fables and is the best-known medieval bestiary. Here, King Noble the Lion holds court to hear the complaint of Isengrin the Wolf.
Animal fantasy is today an active vein of the genre, particularly for young audiences, as in the medievalist series Redwall by Brian Jacques (1986), or Podkin One-Ear by Kieran Larwood (2016). The stories parody heroic adventures at the level of a society of anthropomorphic animals in which each species is endowed with specific characteristics.
