The druids of fantasy have nothing to do with the caste of priests and philosophers that dominated the Gallic world during antiquity. They were a closed elite, monopolizing the cult of the gods and living within society. The romantic view, developed in the 19th century and then though fantasy universes (making the druids active participants in many video and role-playing games), portrays them as hermits, even proto-ecologists, close to nature and early cultures. As such, they generally live in forests.
