In Indo-European mythologies, there are other even more terrible dragons: gigantic forces, capable of threatening the universe itself: among the Greeks, Python, son of Gaia defeated by Apollo; among the Egyptians the serpent Apophis who threatens to swallow the sun; and in the North Nidhogg, who chews the roots of the world-tree Yggdrasil. As with the "world-tree" in Dragon Hunters (series and animated film, 2004-2008), defeating them is not a mere matter of proving one’s worth, but about saving the world.
