Victorian fantasy, as in this illustration from a book of fairy tales, imagines another victory for the hero: instead of killing the dragon, he tames it.
The "fantasy dragon" is a genre in which the story focuses on the relationship between a dragon that has become a steed and the rider who has tamed it. It has become very popular in the years 2000-2010, with the Eragon and Dragon Rider series, and Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon books. Children easily identify with these heroes who are more empathetic than strong, appropriating the power of the beast but also winning its affection.
