In The Carpathian Castle (1892), Jules Verne mocks the public’s credulity in the face of sinister legends attached to the Romanian castle. The irrational fear of creatures such as “those gigantic dragons (...) who kidnap girls of royal blood and even those of lesser lineage, when they are pretty” is inculcated from school onwards, as can be seen in this illustration by Benett showing the fantasies born from the minds of children.
But in J.K. Rowling's wizard world, dragons do exist. Fierce, wild creatures, they are found all over the world. In Volume 1, Hagrid, who has always dreamed of raising a dragon, accompanies the first months of the terrible Norbert, a Norwegian crested baby, before handing him over to the more competent hands of Charlie Weasley, who is making a study of these creatures in Romania.
