Diversification into Other Media: Playful media

The Charge of the Oliphants, in Tolkien et les Sciences
Arnaud Rafaelian, illustrator , 2019
The growing interest in fantasy from the 1970s onwards inspired the creation of new media, especially playful ones such as role-playing games or books in which you are the hero. Direct descendants of the pulps of the 1930s, these call for a large number of interior illustrations — even more than specialised magazines. Initially, they were illustrated in black and white to lower printing costs, but they enabled many artists to earn a living and make a name for themselves. Today, this option is taken up in more generalised books, such as Tolkien et les Sciences with illustrations by Arnaud Rafaelian.
