In 1369, King Charles V of France passed an order banning dice games, board games, court tennis, bowling, puck throwing, soule, marbles, and all games that were of "no direct relevance to teaching weaponry". Anyone who failed to respect this order was required to pay a hefty fine of 40 sous.
