The legal and illegal possibilities for gaming expanded considerably during the Enlightenment era: cabarets and poolrooms, tolerated 'académies' and clandestine gambling dens, lottery offices and open air gaming flourished. Meanwhile, the State decided to get in on the act, granting itself an exclusive Royal Lottery monopoly in 1776.
