				Après son active participation à l'expédition du Challenger et à la publication de ses résultats, l'Écossais John Murray a toute sa vie poursuivi son investigation sur les profondeurs océaniques, et particulièrement les fonds, dans l'Atlantique nord. Ses découvertes ont été rassemblées dans cet ouvrage collectif paru en 1912 et considéré comme le livre fondateur de l'océanographie moderne.
