This surprising, rotating portrait in twelve successive poses is an application of an invention by François Willème (1830-1905). In the 1860s, Willème attempted to combine photography and sculpture via an extremely complex method that had a brief moment of fame. What may have been done with the results of this photo session is unknown, but it is not surprising that Félix Nadar, a real science-and-technology buff, would have been interested in this precursor of 3-D printing technology.
