This portrait dates to the year that Nadar and Ernestine, who was barely 18 years old, were married. Initmately familiar, like some of Nadar's best photograhs, it makes no concessions to the prettiness or romanticism that one would expect in a portrait of a young bride. Instead, the photographer's love is expressed through sincerity and lack of pretense, rather than by staged attractiveness or seduction.
