The Navy officer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza (1852-1905), a naturalized Frenchman from an Italian family, was a key figure in France's colonization of central Africa, particularly the Congo. Here he is posing in native dress brought back from his explorations. He was also one of the most prestigious users of the Détective Nadar camera, designed by Paul Nadar in 1888.
