After Le Géant's spectacular accident in Hanover, in October, 1863, Félix commissioned a large painting commemorating the event from his brother. Adrien wound up accepting the job, but requested more detailed informtion. So Félix built a model of the balloon in distress in his studio. He took a photo and sent it to Adrien to paint from. The painting, which hung for many years in Nadar's various studios, is now in France's Air & Space Museum. The ambitious composition was reproduced in many newspapers of the time.
