Eugène Atget wanted to offer to a clientele of craftsmen, painters and decorators collections of ornaments which were the photographic equivalent of the sets of engravings of Jean Bérain, Jean Lepautre or Sébastien Leclerc, and which, at the time, were selling well at very high prices.
