Though hardly in search of the picturesque in the Paris outskirts, he looks for the same old streets, courtyards, fountains, blind alleys and gates as in Paris. He organises them in his Outskirts (Environs) series: more than a thousand photos taken between 1901 and the end of his life (1927).
