In the 17th century, France establishes a geographic engineer corps. Launch in 1747 under the auspices of the Academy of Sciences, Cassini’s map mobilizes scientists and engineers. But a century and a half would be needed to elaborate new surveying methods and establish an accurate cartography of France.
