Having lost his father when he was just 17, Nadar had to find a way to earn a living in the world of newspapers from a very young age. Philipon, the inventor of the small saitrical press, was also from the city of Lyon and was fiercely opposed to the regime of Louis-Philippe. He was both an employer and a father figure to to Nadar. Their professionnal relationship was often stormy, as Nadar was not terribly ponctual, but it was also strong and long-lasting. It wasn't until the older man's death, in 1862, that Nadar gave up caricature for good.
