Félix Nadar was obliged to go back to work, since his son Paul wasn't paying the life annuity rent due in excahnge for the transfer of the studio in Paris in 1895. In 1897, Félix founded a new studio in a small, neighborhood storefront in Marseille. The shop space was where he welcomed clients, and there was also a cramped room for posing. Despite its modest size, the studio still became "indisputably the number one house here."
