Gustave Doré got his start as an illustrator for small newspapers at a very young age. There he encountered Nadar, his elder by 12 years. The strong bond of friendship they quickly forged would last throughout their lives. The brothers' first portrait of him, for Nadar's Pantheon, was done by Adrien Tournachon; the last, on his deathbed, by Félix Nadar.
