Diplomatic missions provided an ideal opportunity for geographical and scientific discoveries. In 1863, Désiré Charnay covered as a photographer a minor military expedition whose mission was to consolidate French influence in Madagascar. His photos bear witness to his enthusiasm for the diversity of the island’s peoples, the splendour of its landscapes and the gigantic trees.
