Military missions often constituted an indirect method for photographic exploration. In 1905, France and Germany decided to define with precision the border between their respective colonies, the Congo and Cameroon. Apart from its primary objectives, the mission focused closely on the customs of the natives, marvelling at the incredible ethnic diversity observed.
