Apart from the “natural” diversity of different peoples, anthropologists and geographers have been interested – and more durably so – in their cultural variety, i.e. lifestyle, customs, clothing, activities, techniques, productions, beliefs, social structures... These images are reminiscent of “genre scenes”, appreciated by orientalist painters.
