Hic sunt dracones

In many maps and atlases, dragons and sea snakes populated the empty areas, serving decorative purposes but also depicting the dreaded dangers.
Hic sunt dracones (“Here be dragons”) would sometimes mark unexplored areas. Fantasy has taken hold of this idea: magical creatures exist, but hidden from humankind, in places that have not (yet) been discovered. The corollary is also true: any unknown land is likely to be home to dragons...
