Production Centres
The first portulan charts were created in the late 13th century, in various Mediterranean ports. At that time, production centred on port towns like Genoa, Majorca and Venice, where all the necessary input was available: information brought back by experienced seafarers, illustrators with a knowledge of geography, and ship-owners willing to purchase the output.
