Portulan charts of the Indian Ocean rely on older sources concerning this area, notably Arab cartography and Ptolemy's Geography (Ptolemy was a 2^nd century Greek scholar from Alexandria). Charts drafted in the 15^th century combined ancient knowledge with that derived from Arab cartography and travellers' reports, and were subsequently enriched using information brought back by 16^th century navigators.
