The aims of Portugal's explorations as of 1488 were not to find a new world, but to reach the ancient civilisations of the East. They sought to open up new routes to the Far Eastern spice islands and to get a foothold in this rich market, or indeed even supplant the Arab, Persian, Indian and Indonesian navigators who controlled it.
