Latin mappae mundi show Europe, Africa and Asia disposed around the central Mediterranean Sea, while the all-but unknown Indian Ocean, which was often confused with the Red Sea, is banished to the south of the inhabited world. Islamic mappae mundi give much greater importance to the Indian Ocean, with Arabia generally taking central place.
