Speculation on the shape of the Indian Ocean is apparent in the maps:
is it open as the Latin and Arab geographers thought, or closed as Ptolemy believed?
Does it extend south of the equator? Is its entire coastline inhabitable? Asian scholars were equally interested in the Indian Ocean at this time.
