In 1488, the Portuguese navigator Bartolomeo Diaz reached the southernmost point of Africa and rounded the Cape of Good Hope for the first time. Then, in 1489, Henricus Martellus of Florence became the first cartographer to map this route to the Indian Ocean for European navigators.
