The cartographic conventions developed in the 13^th century were gradually enhanced with artwork added by artists, painters and illuminators, to illustrate fauna, flora, peoples, housing styles and means of navigation in newly discovered worlds. Portulan charts thus became an invitation to discover other places and lifestyles.
