The development of photography, which coincided with this major exploration movement of the second half of the XIXth century, gave new life to the occidental imagination about distant lands. Solitary voyagers, scientific expeditions, religious, civil or military missions, brought back images of regions and of peoples that had, until then, been unknown by the Occident.
