In 1847, the British authorities encouraged the government of the Indies to set up a programme for “preserving and documenting the great monuments of India”. Linnaeus Tripe, an officer in the Army of the Indies, was hired by the Madras government to take nearly 400 pictures of cultural sites and sculpture details.
