No great attention was paid to this line, inscribed on maps as a meridian or using standards, until Magellan's Spanish-sponsored voyage, one of the aims of which was to prove that the Moluccas –a group of spice islands in the East Indies– belonged to the Spanish sphere of influence, rather than to Portugal.
