Dutch exploration beyond Europe developed after 1580. Map production rapidly centred around Amsterdam, the home of two important merchant companies, each of which had a monopoly over trade and administration in Dutch-controlled territories: VOC for East India (1602), and WIC for Dutch possessions in the Atlantic (1621).
