At the end of the Civil War, the US federal government launched a series of geological missions throughout the American West. These missions recorded all irregularities of the ground and geological curiosities, inventoried hydrographical networks, collected mineralogical and botanical samples, drew and published maps and atlases and covered disciplines like palaeontology or archaeology.
