Amerigo Vespicci, in a letter addressed to Lorenzo de' Medici and published in 1503, is the first to evoke the New World. He participated in four voyages across the Atlantic, at least one of which was undertaken for the King of Portugal. During the third voyage, he explored the coast of South America while looking for a passage to the Indies and became aware of the impassable mass of the new continent.
