The Map of the Pacific created by Hessel Gerritsz in 1622 incorporated all available information on the Pacific, including under the name Nueva Guinea, part of the north Australian coastline discovered by Jansz in 1606. The map also highlights navigational conditions in the Pacific: strong, regular winds in the north, doldrums that immobilise shipping between the tropics, and storms in the southern Pacific, where ships with trimmed sails are buffeted by hostile seas.
