Using information brought back by the first explorers, artists created a highly codified iconography to depict peoples, plants and animals: naked men, cannibals and peace-loving peoples, slaves and free men, despots and glorious sovereigns, hunting scenes, wild animals, chimera, and luxuriant vegetation.
