The main technical decisions of the Panama Canal project were validated at the headquarters of the Société de géographie, on boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris. The Compagnie universelle du canal interocéanique was founded in 1881, the year in which Ferdinand de Lesseps became President of the Society. Armand Reclus, sent to manage the construction work in Panama, used photography to illustrate his reports.
