The watercoloured photographs of Felice Beato, Raimund von Stillfied and their students portray Japan between tradition and modernity. The landscapes of Tokaido, temples and sacred sites, portraits of elegant women, figures of samurais, street scenes and crafts – bear witness to an eternal Japan, while at the same time the archipelago is undergoing the profound upheaval of the Meiji era.
