Every expedition was a human adventure; every technical innovation took explorers further afield; every discovery helped extend the map. From the 14^th century onwards, portulan charts played a fundamental role in mastering maritime space in the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, however, use of these charts at sea meant that few have survived: damaged and obsolete, they were simply destroyed.
